TL;DR

  • Samsung plans to ship 15 million foldable phones in 2022.
  • That’s likely double what it shipped in 2021.
  • The company is turning to Chinese-made parts to help meet its production goals.

Samsung’s commitment to foldable phones continues unabated, with the company setting some lofty shipment goals for 2022.

Samsung is the leading foldable smartphone maker, and the company has made no secret of its belief that foldables are the next major evolution in smartphone design. The company is doubling down on that belief, projecting its shipments of foldables will top 15 million in 2022, according to ET News.

The two models driving the shipment goal are the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Combined, Samsung believes the two models will account for the estimated 15 million units it expects to ship. The company appears to have ordered parts for an additional three million units, likely because of inventory and production yield considerations.

To help meet the anticipated demand, Samsung is increasingly turning to Chinese-made parts, such as the 12MP front and rear cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

For the sake of comparison, industry estimates cite Samsung’s foldable shipments in 2021 to have landed at around 7.2 million units. In other words, the company expects to double shipments this year.
