Samsung might finally reach a state of chipset equilibrium with the Galaxy S23
Thanks to a Q4 earnings call from Qualcomm, we now have solid ground to speculate that Samsung’s next flagship lineup will sport a Snapdragon chipset across all markets (via GSMArena). This is a major change since in previous years the company’s high-end Galaxy series has always been divided between those with its own Exynos chipsets and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon silicon, which often resulted in some performance discrepancies between the two versions.
During the earnings call mentioned above, Qualcomm CFO Akash Palkhiwala stated that the company’s share of the Galaxy S series chipset will increase from 75% with the Galaxy S22 to a global share with the Galaxy S23 lineup. In other words, all Galaxy S23 units that are to be sold during 2023 will come with a Snapdragon chip inside, no matter the region.
The chipset in question will more likely than not be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 — Qualcomm’s most high-end option — as a recently leaked Galaxy S23 GeekBench results pointed out. Other rumors also paint a somewhat updated design and a new 200MP camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
As for when we can expect Samsung to release its army of Snapdragon-powered flagships — that is a tougher question to answer compared to previous years. There was a report claiming that Samsung will release the S23 series as soon as this December, but that was hard to believe to begin with. A more recent report says that we should expect the Samsung Galaxy S23 sometime in the first week of February, similar to the release schedule until now.
