samsung: Samsung may start making processors exclusive for Galaxy phones – Times of India
Samsung is considering putting in more efforts to boost the performance of its home-grown processors. The South Korean giant has been making an attempt to boost the performance of its Exynos processors. Samsung also replaced its Mongoose cores with ARM’s design two years ago. The company’s latest flagship chip, the Exynos 2200, even features a GPU made in collaboration with AMD. According to PhoneArena, now Samsung is planning to develop chipsets exclusively for its smartphones. The report also explains that Samsung’s System LSI division, which develops the chips, does not have a close relationship with Samsung’s mobile unit, known as MX or Mobile eXperience.
Both the units of the company have a mere buyer-seller relationship which means Samsung’’s MX is just another customer for the LSI division. Moreover, the company’s chip-making division doesn’t develop processors just for Samsung phones but also has other clients like Vivo.
Samsung’s MX Head TM Roh has recently said that the company will now make processors specifically designed for Galaxy phones. Reports suggest that this plan was revealed at a town hall meeting when an employee asked for a solution to resolve the game optimizing service (GOS) controversy.
Samsung phones usually come with the GOS app pre-installed which is designed to prevent the devices from overheating which is done by limiting performance. The company was recently criticised for not allowing customers to disable the service. However, Samsung later rolled out an update to address this issue but the whole fiasco may have affected demand for the Galaxy S22.
The top model of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphones that shipped with Exynos chipsets, also suffered from the same GOS issue. However, the handsets that were powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processors didn’t face any such issue.
Samsung may now plan to walk in the footsteps of Apple to deal with all this. Instead of thinking about selling chips to other manufacturers, the company is likely to focus more on designing chips that will exclusively meet the needs of its Galaxy phones. Samsung may also collaborate with Qualcomm or MediaTek to develop these new chips, however, there has been no official confirmation regarding this.
