Samsung shows off a 360-degree folding display – Times of India

Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung, has introduced a new prototype display and hinge called “Flex In & Out” at CES 2023. The display has the ability to rotate 360 degrees, enabling the device to be folded in both inward and outward directions.
The prototype was showcased to The Verge, but it is not known at this time if or when this technology will be available for commercial use in Samsung’s products.
The 360-degree foldable panel features a hinge design that allows the device to fold completely without leaving any gap, unlike the “water-drop” crease. The prototype is as thick as the current foldable but has moving mechanisms that make the panel bend comfortably without stretching. Additionally, the hinge design creates a less visible crease and puts less stress on the display.
Samsung Display has previously showcased a “Flex In & Out” prototype that embraces the fold-in-all-directions design. In 2021, a similar “Flex In & Out” display was presented at South Korea’s International Meeting for Information Displays (IMID), as reported by Tom’s Guide. However, the previous prototype folded in an “S” shape with multiple segments.
In its latest folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold4, Samsung still uses foldable panels that can only fold flat in one direction. However, this new prototype indicates that Samsung is continuing to explore and develop new foldable display technology that might one day make its way into our hands.
We do not expect Samsung to use the “Flex IN & Out” panel in the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold5. However, we could see the new hinge design making it to the next foldable, which could finally solve the crease problem of Samsung’s foldable smartphones.
Samsung has patented a teardrop hinge design back in 2016, but it was not used due to concerns over waterproofing. However, it is speculated that this issue has been resolved, and Samsung may use the “droplet” or “dumbbell” hinge in the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold5.
