Samsung unveils ‘smart mobile device’ with display that slides as well as folds

Samsung Flex Hybrid: What is it?

According to the company, on the Flex Hybrid, the foldable technology is applied to the left side of the screen, and the slideable technology is applied to the right side of the screen. Movies and videos can be viewed by users on either the smaller display of 10.5 inches with an aspect ratio of 4:3 or the larger display of 12.4 inches with a screen ratio of 16:10.

It must be noted that concepts like these don’t always make it to end products, but the showcased Flex Hybrid is mostly concurrent with Samsung’s current product strategy. The South Korean giant, being an early entrant in the foldable smartphones segment, currently has an 88 percent share in that market. The company launched its flagship foldables – Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 – last year and planning to launch its successor models this year.

Another Samsung product at CES

At Intel Innovation 2022 in September, Samsung Display CEO JS Choi gave a sneak peek of the company’s upcoming 17-inch large-screen slidable display. The display will make its first public appearance at CES. Flex Slidable Solo and Flex Slidable Duet are the concepts that make up the slideable display. Flex Slidable Solo can expand the screen in only one direction, while Flex Slidable Duet can expand the screen in both directions. The screen measures only 13 to 14 inches, making it very portable; however, it can expand to 17.3 inches, making it suitable for multitasking, playing games, or watching movies.
