TL;DR
- Samsung will reportedly stick to side-mounted fingerprint scanners for its 2022 foldables.
- The company purportedly thought about adding an in-display fingerprint sensor to its upcoming foldables.
Samsung has long stuck to side-mounted fingerprint scanners for its foldable phones, with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 adopting this type of fingerprint scanner too. Now, news out of Korea suggests that the 2022 foldables will stick to this location as well.
BusinessKorea reports that Samsung considered adding an in-display fingerprint sensor to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, the manufacturer recently decided against using this tech on the new devices and will use side-mounted fingerprint scanners instead.
These wouldn’t have been the first foldables with in-display fingerprint sensors though, as the upcoming Vivo X Fold will reportedly have in-display scanners on both the smartphone and foldable screen.

Nevertheless, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner still makes a lot of sense on a foldable phone. This option allows users to easily unlock their phone in both closed and open states, only requiring one fingerprint scanner in the first place.
We still have a long way to go before we reach the traditional Q3 launch window for Samsung’s foldables. But we’ll undoubtedly see more Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 leaks before then.
