Sony faces £5 billion lawsuit over claims of ‘high’ PlayStation Store prices
How much did Sony allegedly overcharge consumers
As per the report, the lawsuit claims that Sony has allegedly “ripped people off” by charging a 30% commission on every digital game and in-game purchase made through the PlayStation Store. The legal action states that consumers have been overcharged for their digital gaming purchases by as much as £5bn over the last six years.
Who all are entitled to compensation
The claim filed with the Competition Appeal Tribunal says that anyone in the UK who has purchased digital games or add-on content on their console or via the PlayStation Store since August 19, 2016, will be included in the claim and will be potentially entitled to the compensation.
The report also mentions that the estimated damages per individual member of the class are between £67 and £562 excluding interest. Moreover, Ms Neill has even mentioned that this legal action stands up for the millions of UK people who have been “unwittingly overcharged.” She has also claimed that Sony has abused its position to squeeze more money from its customers.
The UK gaming industry
Ms Neill has explained that gaming is now the biggest entertainment industry in the UK, which has overshadowed other channels like — TV, video and music. She also mentioned that several “vulnerable” people depend on gaming for “community and connection.” Sony’s action is costing millions of people who can’t afford it, particularly when they are in the middle of a cost of living crisis, she added.
