Sony finally enables storage expansion for PlayStation 5, but there’s a big list of requirements – Times of India

Almost eight months after launching its next-generation gaming console, Sony has finally started enabling the storage expansion slot for select users.
The storage expansion slot feature is a part of PlayStation’s beta software version 2.0 and it will only be available to users who are already a part of the beta program.
The software update is currently available in select regions that include Canada, US, Japan, UK, Germany and France.
What is this storage expansion feature on Sony PlayStation 5
Sony launched the PlayStation 5 with 825GB of SSD storage out of which only 667GB is available for users. The PS5 comes with an additional M.2 SSD storage expansion slot that allows users to plug in a compatible SSD into PS5 to expand the storage capacity.
Now, the feature was earlier disabled at the time of launch and Sony promised to enable it later via an update.
Storage expansion on PS5 is handy but not simple
Sony has published a detailed guide on storage expansion on its official website giving complete details about specifications and installation instructions.
According to the website, not all SSDs available will be compatible with PS5. Sony has laid out some specific instructions and requirements for the SSD.
Users can install from 250GB SSD to 4TB on PS5’s M.2 slot. But, they will have to meet a certain size of the cooling structure, speed, module width and more. Here’s a list of requirements as per the PS5 website:

  • Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD
  • Capacity: 250GB – 4TB
  • Cooling structure: Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format. There are also M.2 SSDs that have cooling structures (such as heatsinks) built-in.
  • Sequential read speed: 5,500MB/s or faster is recommended
  • Module width: 22mm width (25mm width is not supported)
  • Form Factor: M.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
  • Socket type: Socket 3 (Key M)

Finding an SSD with specifications other than the cooling structure is an easy task. However, there’s some specific set of cooling structures required for the SSD to work properly with PS5. The good thing is that Sony is giving users the option to snap their own single-sided or double-sided heat sink over the SSD and use it with the PS5.
If you happen to be in one of the select regions and want to test out the new storage expansion feature, you’ll need to enrol into the beta program and download the latest software update on your PlayStation 5.
