Google has announced a new version of Chrome OS that’s designed to run on Mac and Windows-based computers. Dubbed Chrome OS Flex, the operating system offers almost similar features as the regular operating system which includes support for Google cloud-based services including Google Assistant, Chrome browser, etc. You can click to know everything about the Chrome OS Flex.
Meanwhile, if you have an old Windows or Mac device lying around your house or you simply want to give the Chrome OS Flex a try, here are the steps you’ll need to follow:
Pre-requisites:
- A Windows, Mac or Linux device that’s certified to run ChromeOS Flex
- An 8GB USB drive to create installer drive
- Check whether your device is certified to run ChromeOS Flex (click here to check the complete list of certified devices
- Back up all your data carefully as the process will erase everything you have on the system
Minimum hardware requirements:
- Architecture: Intel or AMD x86-64-bit compatible device
- RAM: 4 GB
- Internal storage: 16 GB
- Bootable from USB drive
- BIOS: Full administrator access. You’ll need to boot from the Chrome OS Flex USB installer and make some adjustments in the BIOS if you run into issues.
- Processor and graphics: Components made before 2010 might result in a poor experience.
Note: Intel GMA 500, 600, 3600, and 3650 graphics hardware do not meet Chrome OS Flex performance standards.
Install Chromebook Recovery Utility
- On Chrome web browser on the device, you want to install Chrome OS Flex
- Head to the Chrome web store and search Chromebook Recovery Utility
- Tap on Add to Chrome button, tap Add extension when asked
- The Chromebook Recovery Utility is now an extension is now installed on your Chrome browser
Enable Chrome Recovery Utility extension
On Chrome browser, click Extensions and then choose Manage extensions. Now, enable the toggle in front of the Chromebook Recovery Utility
Prepare the USB installer
- Launch the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension
- Click on Get Started button
- Choose your model from the list
For Select a manufacturer, find and click Google Chrome OS Flex.
For Select a product, find and click Chrome OS Flex (Developer-Unstable).
- Click on Continue and plug in the USB drive when asked
- From the dropdown menu, select the USB drive.
- Click Continue and then click on Create now.
Boot the system using the bootable drive you have created
- For this shutdown your system completely
- Plug in the USB Drive and then start the system by pressing the power button
- As soon as you see the brand logo on your screen, press the BIOS button to open the BIOS of the computer
- Boot the device from the USB drive.
- Choose USB as the bootable drive or boot option
Note: Different manufacturers have different ways to implement the BIOS system and all of them come with different hotkeys to open the Boot Menu or BIOS. Refer to the user manual of system to open the BIOS or Boot Menu.
Install Chrome OS Flex on your device
- As soon as the system boots up via the USB drive, you’ll see a Welcome to CloudReady 2.0 screen. You’ll need to follow some instructions to install the Chrome OS Flex.
- Click the Get started button and click on Install CloudReady 2.0
- Carefully review the on-screen warning about erasing data and click the Install CloudReady button again
- After the installation process is complete, a completion message will appear and then the device will turn off automatically. Now, take out the USB drive and restart the computer and start using Chrome OS Flex.
- When the installation is complete, you’ll see a message on the screen. The device turns off automatically.
