T-Mobile to pay out $350 million to customers affected by 2021 data breach

TL;DR

  • T-Mobile has settled a class action lawsuit for its infamous 2021 data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of customers.
  • The company will pay a sum of $350 million to be split between affected customers and lawyers.
  • It will spend another $150 million on security improvements.

The massive leak exposed the personal information of approximately 76.6 million US residents. Compromised data included Social Security numbers, names, addresses, and driver’s license information of T-Mobile customers.

An amount of $350 million will be divided between affected customers who respond to the class action settlement and the lawyers on the case.

The individual payout customers will get depends on how much the lawyers are paid and how many people claim the settlement.

The court filing doesn’t appear to have separate terms for people affected differently by the hack. So even if not all the aforementioned personal details of a subscriber were leaked, they would still be eligible for an equal settlement as someone who got more adversely affected by the breach.

The remaining $150 million of the $500 settlement will go towards security improvements across the network between now and 2023.

T-Mobile will soon notify affected subscribers about the settlement.
