TalkTalk reveals its Black Friday deal, but here’s why it’s not as good as you think
If you’ve been waiting with bated breath for TalkTalk to reveal its Black Friday savings, you’re probably going to be a little disappointed. The broadband firm has announced its latest round of deals, which start from £21 a month. But if you can get a connection from another internet provider, you might be better looking further afield.
TalkTalk has dropped its Fibre 35 bundle down to £21 a month, which isn’t a bad price. For that, you can expect average download speeds of 38Mbps. That’s not setting any records. The average home broadband speed in the UK, as measured earlier this year, sits at 70Mbps.
That means you’ll be getting a below-average speed. However, if you don’t stream a lot of 4K Ultra HD video content, or have multiple smart home gadgets all connected at the same time, it should be fine. Over the 18-month minimum contract, you’ll spend a total of £378, which is pretty reasonable.
But be aware, there are much better deals out there. For example, Vodafone currently charges £20.49 a month for its broadband package with average download speeds between 72-73.5Mbps. That’s a little faster than the average home broadband connection – and 34Mbps faster than TalkTalk.
For comparison, Netflix suggests 25Mbps bandwidth to watch boxsets and blockbuster movies in its 4K Ultra HD picture quality. So, that means you’ll be able to stream in the highest quality available from Netflix …and still have more bandwidth left as TalkTalk’s Fibre 35 plan.
Those who don’t mind getting their broadband via a mobile signal might also want to check out Three Mobile with the UK network currently offering average 100Mbps speeds for just £14 per month. Three also regularly offers generous freebies with its broadband plans, including free TVs and laptops.
If you’re able to sign-up with full-fibre broadband supplier GigaClear, which is only in a limited number of places nationwide right now, you can secure 300Mbps download speeds for £24 a month. Over 18-months, you’ll pay £432 in total. That’s only £54 more than TalkTalk, but you’ll be getting almost 8x faster speeds for the duration of your contract.
