Tecno Phantom X2 Pro: First impressions – Times of India

Tecno is a well known brand when we talk about the budget smartphone segment. However, now the company aims to expand further and become aggressive in the mid-range premium smartphone segment. With this same thought in mind Tecno launched its latest flagship smartphone Phantom X2 Pro at an event in Dubai. We got a chance to spend some time with the smartphone and here’s our first initial impressions of the smartphone.
Design
There is no doubt that Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is the one of the prettiest looking Tecno smartphones. The company has invested a lot in its design which makes it look premium and elegant. The sleek Tenco Phantom X2 Pro comes with a curved edge display and curved edge back panel. The front is dominated by an FHD+ display and the rear panel is made of renewable material which makes it stand out in the premium smartphone segment. The rear panel offers a different kind of touch feel and it also makes the smartphone comfortable to hold. Also the different material of the back panel makes it fingerprint resistant. The right side of the smartphone is home to the volume rockers and the power button. The button part houses the charging port and the stereo speakers, while the SIM card tray is placed at the top. In all the smartphone scores well in the design segment and will be appreciated by many for the same reason.
Display
The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro sports a 6.8-inch FHD+ curved display with 1080×2400 pixel resolution. The display is protected with a coating of Corning Gorilla Glass Vitus on top. The display offers 120Hz of refresh rate, which offered a smooth scrolling experience when we used the smartphone. The screen is surrounded by thin bezels on all sides offering a much larger real estate. Along with this, the display also offers wide viewing angles enabling you to enjoy your gaming and binge watching sessions. The company claims that the smartphone offers good visibility under direct sunlight, but we were not able to test that. Apart from this, the display appears to be smooth and crisp and the colour reproduction was also sharp and accurate.
Hardware and Software
The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Dimesnity 9000 chipset paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage. The smartphone also offers 5GB of virtual RAM support. During our initial testing, the smartphone performed well without any glitches. We also had a smooth gaming and multitasking experience on the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro.
Along with a pretty decent processor, the Tecno Phantom X2 is backed by a fairly large battery. The premium smartphone of the company houses a 5,160 mAh battery with 45W fast charging support. The company claims that the smartphone will charge up to 50% in just 20 minutes. However, we are yet to test this claim as well. The dual SIM smartphone comes equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor and stereo speakers for better sound output.
Coming to the software, the Phantom X2 Pro runs Android 12 operating system topped with the company’s own layer of HiOS 12. The smartphone offers a smooth user interface but you will notice a lot of bloatware apps and some of them cannot be uninstalled. Also there’s no app drawer so all your downloaded apps will sit on the homescreen making it look cluttered. The smartphone offers all the native Android 12 features which we will cover in the detailed review when the smartphone will launch in India.
Camera
Tecno Phantom X2 is the first smartphone of the company to come with a retractable triple rear camera setup. The rear camera comprises 50MP main lens, 50MP retractable portrait lens and a 13MP wide angle lens. . As the name suggests the retractable camera works only in the portrait mode and it tries to capture the subject in the best possible way. You also get a 32MP camera in the front for selfies. During our initial testing the camera worked fine. The images captured indoors turned out quite well with accurate amounts of colour reproduction and detailing. We were not able to test the cameras in outdoor situations so, for its complete analysis you will have to wait for the smartphone to launch in India.
What we think
The Phantom X2 Pro is definitely a good attempt from Tecno. The smartphone can easily compete with the Nord series from OnePlus and with the Neo series from Realme. However, for a complete and better verdict on the smartphone we will have to wait for its India launch to happen.
