Telegram: WhatsApp has a ‘security warning’ for Telegram users – Times of India

WhatsApp head Will Cathcart has pointed out the ‘biggest security flaw’ in Telegram. He outlined the security vulnerabilities in the competing messaging platform, suggesting people not use it.
“If you think Telegram is secure, you should read this article and understand the truth – especially before you use it for anything private,” Cathcart said while quoting an article from Wired. The executive also shared his personal critique of Telegram’s implementation of end-to-end encryption (E2EE).
Telegram has an ‘encryption’ problem, says WhatsApp head
According to Cathcart, the integrity of Telegram’s E2EE implementation has not been confirmed independently. He adds that there are further weaknesses, such as E2EE is not activated by default and is not accessible for group chats. (Telegram says it would create data backup difficulties).
Cathcart does not stop here. He says that Telegram has an API baked in that can be used to share user data for mass surveillance. Telegram’s privacy policy, which says that user data is never handed over to governments, also does not have Cathcart convinced.
The WhatsApp head says that Telegram is far from an “encrypted” app and hopes that people understand this before it gets too late. He urges people not to use Telegram and use other messaging apps that offer end-t0-end encryption, and it does need to be WhatsApp.
That is not it. WhatsApp did not even leave the SMS, the most basic way of texting. Cathcart, in a tweet, said that about 5.5 billion SMS messages are still sent daily, just in the US, but SMS messages are not encrypted.
Meta’s encryption fight with Apple
This is not the first time WhatsApp has picked up a fight on encryption. Last year, amid the ongoing “green bubble and blue bubble” discussion, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched an attack on Apple’s iMessage.
Zuckerberg’s attack on iMessage occurred in an Instagram post, where he claimed that WhatsApp offers greater privacy and security than iMessage. He noted that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption is functional on both iPhones and Android devices, even for group chats, as well as having encrypted backups and disappearing messages, which are all absent from iMessage.
