Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? (BritBox)

why didnt they ask evans

What you need to know:

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Seasons: 1
  • Creator: Hugh Laurie
  • Main cast: Carlie Enoch, Richard Dixon, Benedict Wolf, Andrew Hill, Martyn Ellis
  • Genre: Historical Fiction/Mystery
  • Ratings: 7.1 — IMDB / 100% — Rotten Tomatoes

The BritBox streaming service has no shortage of mystery TV series from the UK to stream and binge-watch. However, one of its recent shows stood out from the rest. Based on a 1930s novel by legendary mystery novelist Agatha Christie, this three-part series starts out with a young man on a golf course. He sees a man who is greatly injured and goes to help him. The man quickly dies but not before saying his last words: “Why didn’t they ask Evans?” The man decides to become a detective to find out why the dying man said those words, with the help of a young woman. Both of them soon discover there’s a lot more going on than they first thought.

Hugh Laurie, best known as an actor in movies and his starring turn on the TV show House, wrote and directed this adaptation. It certainly has that UK mystery vibe, but the characters and plot still are highly entertaining to watch.

The Rehearsal (HBO Max)

What you need to know:

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Seasons: 1
  • Creator: Nathan Fielder
  • Main cast: Nathan Fielder
  • Genre: Comedy/Reality
  • Ratings: 8.6 — IMDB / 96% — Rotten Tomatoes

This is the only non-scripted show on this list. Comedian Nathan Fielder previously employed his deadpan humor in another comedy-reality series, Nathan For You, where he used his “expertise” to help people with failing businesses. In this HBO Max show, he does something a bit similar. He still helps people, but now he does it by creating rehearsals for big moments in a person’s life, such as a wedding proposal or preparing for motherhood.

This new show goes even deeper, however, as it shows Fielder himself dealing with pressures to put off these life simulations. It’s all very meta, funny, and even dramatic at times.

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Min Jin Lee, this a truly epic generational family series on Apple TV Plus. It starts in Korea in the early 1900s when a teenage girl gets involved with a rich young man. This small interaction would soon have huge repercussions for the girl and starts a story that will span across decades of history. This is not a melodramatic soap opera; it’s a walk through a family’s life over the years, with ups and downs.

A typical high school reunion in Los Angeles goes sideways when one of the former students invites some of his “friends” to an after-party at his megamansion. Soon, he’s found dead, and there are tons of suspects for the LAPS detection to go through. This comedy series focuses on one character at the party in each episode, as we see what happened in their eyes. This different type of narrative structure results in not only a funny show but one that will also keep you guessing who the killer is until the end.

What you need to know:

  • Main cast: Harold Perrineau, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, Hannah Cheramy, Simon Webster
  • Genre: Horror
  • Ratings: 7.6 — IMDB / 96% — Rotten Tomatoes

The Epix pay cable and streaming service (soon to be renamed to MGM Plus) has a number of cool original series to check out. One of their latest and best is this show. During a road trip, a family drives into a small and isolated town. They soon discover that they cannot leave the town’s borders, no matter how hard they try, and that the town’s other “residents” are in the same situation. Even worse, there are things that come out at night…

This horror series has elements of The Prisoner, Lost, and Predator movies. It all comes together in a very mysterious and very scary series.

Paper Girls (Amazon Prime Video)

What you need to know:

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Seasons: 1
  • Creator: Stephany Folsom
  • Main cast: Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, Sofia Rosinsky, Fina Strazza, Ali Wong
  • Genre: Teen drama/Scifi
  • Ratings: 7.3 — IMDB / 91% — Rotten Tomatoes

Amazon Prime Video had lots of great shows that debuted in 2022. One of them was this fun teen drama based on the Image Comics series by writer Brian K. Vaughan and drawn by Cliff Chiang. In 1988, four young paper delivery girls get caught up in a mysterious storm. They soon learn they have been transported forward to 2019, and one of the four encounters her future grown-up self. The girls later learn they are in the middle of a war between two factions who want to rule all of time.

The reason this show works so well is the performances of the young actors playing these teenagers who are caught up in a completely unexpected situation. There’s also lots of time-travel action as well. Sadly, we won’t be getting a second season, but it’s worth it to watch what we did get.

A League Of Their Own (Amazon Prime Video)

What you need to know:

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Seasons: 1
  • Creator: Abbi Jacobson, Will Graham
  • Main cast: Abbi Jacobson, Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Roberta Colindrez, Gbemisola Ikumelo
  • Genre: Historical fiction/Comedy
  • Ratings: 7.5 — IMDB / 94% — Rotten Tomatoes

Here’s another great new show that debuted on Amazon Prime Video. It’s the TV adaptation of a real-life historical event. Many men in the US fought overseas in World War II, including many pro baseball players. As a result, an effort was made to launch an all-woman pro baseball league. The show is highly fictionalized, but that’s okay. The message of the series is that women can do anything men can do and that gender shouldn’t keep anyone from their dreams of playing baseball or anything else.

Interview With The Vampire (AMC Plus)

streaming shows missed Jacob Anderson as Louis De Point Du Lac and Sam Reid as Lestat De Lioncourt in Interview with the Vampire

What you need to know:

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Seasons: 1
  • Creator: Rolin Jones
  • Main cast: Jacob Anderson, Sam Reid, Bailey Bass, Eric Bogosian, Assad Zaman
  • Genre: Historical fiction/Horror
  • Ratings: 7.0 — IMDB / 100% — Rotten Tomatoes

AMC Plus may be the home for future series based on The Walking Dead, but it’s also the home for a number of cool original series as well. That includes this latest adaptation of the novel by the late Anne Rice. The series is pretty faithful to the source material. The framing device is still set in the present, where a journalist starts interviewing a man who claims to be a vampire that’s over 100 years old. The series mainly takes place in early 20th-century New Orleans, where the narrator of our tale first gets turned into a vampire by the centuries-old Lestat.

The series, unlike the 1994 movie adaptation of the novel, fully embraces the novel’s LGBTQ+ themes, as well as its pure horror elements as well.

Our Flag Means Death (HBO Max)

Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi in Our Flag Means Death - best lgbtq shows streaming shows missed

What you need to know:

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Seasons: 1
  • Creator: David Jenkins
  • Main cast: Rhys Darby, Taika Waititi, Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz
  • Genre: Historical fiction/Comedy
  • Ratings: 7.8 — IMDB / 92% — Rotten Tomatoes

HBO Max had better not delete this show from its streaming service. It’s a funny parody of pirate movies and shows, but it’s also based loosely on the life of a real person. Stede Bonnet was a proper English gentleman in the early 18th century who decided to leave his life of privilege and travel on a sailing ship as the Gentleman Pirate. The series definitely isn’t an attempt at accurate historical fiction; it’s a hilarious comedy about pirates. It also has some unexpected relationships, including when Bonnet meets the legendary pirate Blackbeard.

The Staircase (HBO Max)

Toni Collette dancing with Colin Firth in The Staircase - Jeffrey Dahmer show streaming shows missed

What you need to know:

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Seasons: 1
  • Creator: Antonio Campos
  • Main cast: Colin Firth, Toni Collette, Michael Stuhlbarg, Juliette Binoche, Dane DeHaan
  • Genre: True Crime
  • Ratings: 7.1 — IMDB / 92% — Rotten Tomatoes

True crime has become a huge trend in streaming shows, both in documentary form and in scripted docuseries. This HBO Max show is a docudrama about a true crime that’s highly inspired by a famed documentary (Death on the Staircase), where the people filming it started to become somewhat involved in this case. The true crime itself centers on Michael Peterson, who is arrested on suspicion of murder for allegedly killing his wife by pushing her down the stairs at their home in North Carolina.

Colin Firth is excellent as Michael Peterson, as is Toni Collette as his wife. The supporting cast is also terrific, including the sons and daughters of the Peterson family, who have their own ideas of what happened when their mother died. The documentary crew are also depicted in this scripted series, and it shows how they might have influenced the case.

That’s just a sample of some of the best streaming shows you could have missed in 2022. We hope you take the time to check out some of these series, and be sure to let us know your hidden gems of 2022 in the comments!
