The dramatic changes that could be coming to iPhone and Android revealed

Phones have come a long way in the last twenty years: the Nokias and Motorolas of 2001 look incredibly outdated nowadays, while we would have been astounded at the range of features and capabilities we carry in our pockets today.

Now, new research has revealed what we could be scrolling on in another two decades. Phone reseller Buymobiles has created illustrations to show what the phone of the future will look like – and it’s definitely futuristic.

Buymobiles examined details from brands like Apple, Samsung and Google to find out the specs and features they are planning to develop for future models. It also examined Google search trends over the past two years and recent articles written about upcoming features.

Some of their findings won’t surprise you. Folding screens are already on sale in the Galaxy Fold series. But Buymobiles thinks bendable and flexible screens will take off as phone brands work out how to make the tech behind them cheaper. These could even wrap around your wrist to create the ultimate wearable.

Self-healing screens are also tipped to become popular – incredibly handy for those of us prone to dropping our phones. In the future, these polymer screens will be able to fix cracks and scratches as if by magic. They might even be holographic, meaning they could project 3D images out of the screen.

Finally, sustainability will be more and more of a focus. Brands will vie to create the most environmentally-friendly phone possible. This could mean making phones longer-lasting, including more recycled materials or using fewer precious resources.

Jess Canning, Mobile Phone Expert at Buymobiles, said of the new research: “It’s such a fascinating thing to try to predict, given the fast-paced, ever-changing nature of the mobile phone industry.

“With our mockup being based on comprehensive research on all the features that brands are looking to use, we are confident our designs won’t be too far away from future smartphones.

She added: “Some of them are certainly well on the way to being implemented, such as no charging ports which manufacturers have been looking to do for some time, so we would expect that to be a part of phones very soon.

“However, it may be a little more time before we see holographic displays and self-healing screens, as those are perhaps some of the more advanced features within the research.”
