“Apple reinvents the phone,” Steve Jobs said while announcing the original iPhone with 2G support back in January 2007. And on June 29, 2007, the iPhone went on sale for the first time in the US. It’s 2021 and the world is now awaiting the launch of iPhone 13 series with 5G support 14 years later.
Apple was developing the original iPhone from 2005 in complete secrecy for over two years changing the way mobile phones looked like and also conceptualised that your mobile phone should always be connected to the internet. And not to forget, mobile phones shouldn’t require so many hardware buttons when a simple touch screen powered by reliable software can replace it all.
The original iPhone came at a price of $499 for the 4GB model and $599 for the 8GB model. And just to clarify, the 4GB and 8GB indicate internal storage and not RAM. The original iPhone had to be purchased with an AT&T contract.
The device was powered by iPhoneOS along with Samsung 32-bit ARM chip clocked at 412 MHz. It offered a 3.5-inch LCD display with resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and came with sensors like proximity, ambient light, and accelerometer. It was powered by a 1,400mAh battery and of course, it had a 3.5mm headphone jack. As for the rear camera, a 2MP single lens camera was all that people got.
