The iPhone 13 is the star of the show for Apple in India, here’s why

It certainly seems to be a good festive season for Apple in India. A report by Counterpoint Research reveals that Apple attained its highest ever market share in India. While 5% may sound relatively less, it does represent a significant moment for Apple in India.

iPhone 13: The best selling smartphone in India

Considering that India has always been a really price sensitive market and that the iPhone has always been a premium product, it does come as a surprise to see an iPhone topping sales charts in India, According to Counterpoint, the iPhone 13 became the first iPhone to top the overall smartphone shipments in India in a quarter. This is another first for Apple and does indicate that the pull for owning an iPhone remains stronger than ever, even in a price sensitive market in India. During the festive season in the quarter, the iPhone 13 was selling for as low — for a brief period of time — as Rs 50,000 on Flipkart. There were attractive discounts offered on both Flipkart and Amazon. Offline retailers too were offering deals and discounts on all iPhones but it’s the iPhone 13 that seems to have caught the fancy of most Indian iPhone buyers.

Apple continues to reign the premium phone market

As per the report by Counterpoint Research, in the premium segment (>Rs 30,000), Apple led the smartphone shipments, capturing a 40% share.Samsung and OnePlus came in second and third place in the premium segment. Apple has a rather robust portfolio in India and its nicely spread across price range in the premium segment. The iPhone SE (2022), iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14 are the models buyers can actually purchase starting from anywhere close to Rs 45,000 (depending on deals and discounts) to up to Rs 80,000. Even though Samsung may have models in the premium segment, the aspirational value of Apple is clearly higher, as the numbers by Counterpoint suggest.
