There might not be a OnePlus 9T this year | Digit

OnePlus has had a busy 2021 so far but looks like things are going to take a downturn in the second half. Max Jambor, a reliable source for smartphone leaks, has revealed in a terse tweet that there would be no 9T this year. Max was also the first last year to reveal that OnePlus had cancelled the 8T Pro in order to focus on the 8T.

He doesn’t say if OnePlus is opting for a new naming scheme or planing something else, but in all likelihood, the OnePlus 9T has been cancelled for good – and we are not exactly surprised.

OnePlus started with its T series towards the end of 2016 after being rejuvenated by the success of the OnePlus 3. The idea was to not make consumers wait for the latest technology development for an entire year. In context with the 9T, we were hearing rumours of a high refresh rate LTPO display, but perhaps we will have to wait for the OnePlus 10 launch next year.

The reason why the OnePlus 9T is being cancelled?

OnePlus isn’t the only brand skipping on mid-cycle flagship refreshes in 2021. Samsung recently confirmed that the next Note phone will not launch at the upcoming Unpacked event to be held on August 11. It will still bring in Foldable phones, the much-awaited Galaxy Watch 4, and the new Galaxy Buds 2.

The reason for these cancellations is reportedly the ongoing chip shortage that’s affecting almost all of us in one way or the other. Facing the brunt of the shortage in China, Huawei has reportedly abandoned low-end smartphone production. It’s could also allegedly be cancelling the Huawei Mate 50 to focus on the Huawei P50 series.

The new development should come as a disappointment for OnePlus fans who have been waiting for the 9T. If you have been planning to buy one, it should make more sense to settle for the OnePlus 9 (which is currently being sold for an attractive discount in the Prime Day Sale).
