This AI apps trend may be dead, here’s why

The AI or artificial intelligence-powered photo apps trend is reportedly over. So shows the new data from app intelligence company Apptopia, first published by TechCrunch. The data indicates that consumer interest in AI photo apps has fallen as quickly as it rose. The last few months saw AI-powered photo apps going viral on both App Store and Google Play store. The company claims that it analysed top AI photo apps worldwide, tracking both their download growth and in-app consumer spending.
Apptopia’s Adam Blacker described this as “another fad comes and goes,” on Twitter. He also shared a graph that shows the rise and fall of these apps.
From highs to lows
Apptopia claims that it looked at the download trends for Lensa AI and other leading AI photo apps. The company found that this group of AI apps first began to take off around Thanksgiving, then hit their peak in terms of both downloads and in-app purchases around mid-December. At their height of popularity, the apps topped 4.3 million daily downloads and ~$1.8 million per day in consumer spending via in-app purchases. AI photo app Lensa soared to take the number one spot in the US on Apple’s App charts in early December. On December 13, AI photo editing apps dominated Apple’s App Store charts in the US, holding three of the top four positions.

Those numbers have significantly dropped since. On November 11, the apps saw their lowest revenue, at $0.37 million. And, a week later on November 19, they saw the lowest number of downloads, at 0.84 million. As of February 13, these apps saw only around 952,000 combined downloads and around $507,000 in consumer spending, as the numbers continue to drop.
Photo apps analysed
The photo apps analysed Apptopia’s research include Lensa, Prequel, Facetune, Remini, Pixelup, Fotor, Wonder, FacePlay, Aiby, FaceApp, Gradient, Dawn AI, Voilà AI Artist, New Profile Pic Avatar Maker and Meitu among others.
