This French minister won’t pay for Twitter’s Blue Tick subscription

Tesla CEO Elon Musk successfully acquired the micro-blogging site Twitter in October in a $44 billion deal, six months after the billionaire announced his plans to buy the company. Since Musk’s arrival, Twitter has gone through multiple changes in an attempt to increase the company’s revenue. Starting with firing the top executives of the firm to major layoffs, Twitter has seen a lot of changes in a few days. Amongst these changes, the move to charge subscription fees for Twitter’s verification check mark has been one of the changes that have been criticised by both users and experts alike.
According to a report by Reuters, French minister and government spokesman Olivier Veran has also said that he won’t be paying Twitter’s monthly fee for the blue tick. Veran also noted that he is concerned about the “ambitions of the social media platform’s new owner Elon Musk.”

Twitter’s Blue Tick subscription fee
Elon Musk’s Twitter earlier announced the $7.99 fee for the blue tick and the company recently updated its iOS app with the new subscriptions. Before the Musk takeover, a blue tick beside a username meant that Twitter had confirmed the account that belongs to the person or company claiming it.
The Apple App Store listing mentions that Twitter will start charging for the blue tick and users who apply for the subscription will receive the checkmarks next to their usernames, “just like the celebrities, companies and politicians you already follow”.

French minister won’t pay for Twitter blue tick
Olivier Veran has invited Twitter to “decertify” his account if it considers blue ticks to be something that users need to start paying for. He wasn’t even sure if he would continue using Twitter after Musk’s takeover.
Veran also added that Twitter is a major communication tool that has more than 10 million French users and the government official himself has a verified Twitter account with a blue checkmark next to his name. France’s former health minister even has nearly 425,000 followers on his account.
