This ‘iconic’ Apple product is now obsolete
Apple has added one more product to its obsolete list today. Launched back in 2013, the 16GB iPod Touch fifth-generation is now officially obsolete worldwide. That means, the company will no longer offer service for the device and neither will they provide replacement parts to third-party repair firms.
The fifth-generation 16GB iPod Touch was an important device from the company. Apple announced this device to bring the cost down for buyers. The company dropped half the storage and rear iSight camera from the then-current fifth-generation iPod Touch that brought the price down to $229 compared to the $299 of the 32GB variant.
Apple iPad Touch 16GB model featured a 4-inch Retina display and was powered by a dual-core Apple A5 chipset. The packaging included the Apple EarPods as well.
Back then, the 16GB model was only available in Silver colour option and it didn’t come with a wrist strap.
Apple, then officially discontinued the entire fifth-generation iPod Touch lineup with sixth-generation which brought improved performance, features and, yes, the rear iSight camera back to iPod Touch. Apple then replaced the iPod Touch sixth-generation with seventh in 2019.
So, if you own a 16GB iPod Touch sixth generation, it’s time to upgrade.
How Apple deems a product to be obsolete
After Apple has discontinued a product, it slowly becomes vintage and then becomes obsolete. Basically, Apple calls a product Vintage, if it has stopped selling it for at least five years, but less than seven years. And, if a product has been discontinued for more than seven years by Apple, then it is considered obsolete. After this, it will no longer receive any support or service from Apple.
