This nine-year old Apple device is now ‘dead’ – Times of India
Apple’s fourth-generation iPad is now an obsolete product. The device was launched in 2012 and is no longer eligible for hardware repairs worldwide. The update was reported by Macrumors which says to have seen an internal memo declaring the fourth-generation Apple iPad as obsolete.
To recall, the device was launched in 2012 alongside the Apple iPad Mini. It was the first Apple tablet to come with a lightning port, ditching the 30-pin connector. The fourth generation Apple iPad has an A6X chipset with up to twice the CPU performance than the predecessor A5X processor in the third-generation iPad device.
As per the memo, the iPhone maker has also declared the 2012 model of Mac mini as obsolete.
What is an obsolete Apple product?
Apple categorises products as vintage after it stops distributing them for more than five years or less than seven years. Vintage Apple products are eligible for repair, although it is subject to part availability.
While obsolete Apple products are those that have not been available on the Apple Store for more than seven years. These products are not eligible for repair. However, they can be repaired by a network of more than 5,000 Apple-certified technicians.
Repair of the fourth-generation iPad, now obsolete, will not be offered by Apple. The repair, however, from the certified technicians will depend on parts availability from third-party sources. Given the age of the device, the repair will not be cheaper.
