TMobile in talks to acquire Mint Mobile, claims report – Times of India

Mint Mobile, the prepaid telecom service provider owned in part by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, is reportedly on block. According to a report in Bloomberg, the company is “in talks” with mobile carrier T-Mobile. For those unaware, Mint Mobile is a division of Ultra Mobile. The report claims that T-Mobile is interested in buying Mint. If this happens, Mint would join Metro PCS as a sub-brand — which T-Mobile bought and changed to Metro by T-Mobile. Incidentally, there have been rumours of Mint Mobile being on sale earlier too.
In the last few years, Mint Mobile has made a name for itself in recent years with its affordable pricing. The company pitches itself to consumers as a more affordable option to larger telecom companies like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Reynolds too has been actively appearing in the company’s ads.
How Mint Mobile acquisition may affect subscribers
Mint Mobile does not run its own 4G LTE or 5G service and instead is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator). The carrier is an MVNO of T-Mobile, which means that Mint operates independently but leases cell tower access from T-Mobile. If the acquisition takes place, subscribers are unlikely to be affected as Mint already uses T-Mobile’s network, so this may not affect coverage much. What may change for subscribers, if the deal goes through, is the pricing, availability of plans, etc.
The report does not say if TMobile is looking to buy Ultra Mobile alongside Mint, or if T-Mobile is just interested in Mint Mobile. It’s also unclear if Mint Mobile will continue to exist as a separate brand or be folded into other T-Mobile-owned brands such as Metro by T-Mobile.
Reynolds became part-owner of Mint Mobile in 2019 and has promoted the company through TV ads. He currently owns about one-fourth of Mint Mobile.
