Twitter 2.0: Elon Musk wants to encrypt DMs, videos and more
Citing a recording of the meeting, The Verge says that Musk – in a presentation titled “Twitter 2.0” – told his employees that the company would encrypt DMs. He also said that the teams would work to add encrypted video and voice calling between accounts.
“We want to enable users to be able to communicate without being concerned about their privacy, [or] without being concerned about a data breach at Twitter causing all of their DMs to hit the web, or think that maybe someone at Twitter could be spying on their DMs. That’s obviously not going to be cool and it has happened a few times before,” Musk reportedly said.
It is to be noted that in 2018, Twitter warned a number of users that a bug may have caused some interactions, including Direct Messages or protected Tweets, to be unintentionally sent to another registered developer.
Musk says Signal creator is willing to help
Musk told his employees that he’s had a word with Signal creator Moxie Marlinspike, who is now “potentially willing to help out” with encryption. “Ironically, Moxie Marlinspike worked at Twitter and actually wanted to do encrypted DMs several years ago, [but] was denied that and then went and created Signal,”
Musk was quoted as saying. Musk also wants “to have the ability to do voice and video chat via DMs.” It is to be noted that Signal requires users to share their phone numbers in order to make calls but it seems Twitter will be able to pull this off via the account system. In this way, they won’t have to share their numbers with other account holders.
