Twitter bans, then unbans links to Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms

Twitter bans, then unbans links to Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms
Twitter, on Sunday, said that it would not allow users to promote their presence on other social platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, and others. Though in a weird turn of events, Twitter CEO Elon Musk apologised for the policy change, and Twitter also deleted the tweet and post outlining the new policy.
No more free advertising to competitors, says Elon Musk
As per the now deleted policy, the users can no longer include links to their profiles on other social networks, including Facebook, Instagram, and Mastodon, among others, in their Twitter bio, nor can they tweet links to posts shared on other social profiles on Twitter.
Also, the users cannot share their usernames or handles, even without URLs. And if someone tries to replace the ‘.’ with ‘dot,’ also sharing screenshots will also be considered a violation of the policy
The ban does not limit to social media platforms but also to social media profile aggregators, including linktr.ee, which is used by many.
Twitter and Elon say that crossposting is allowed, it just does not want to do free advertising for competitors, and every other traditional social media platform does the same, as per Musk.
With rules in place, it is fine to post links to your Facebook or Instagram posts occasionally, but if you are using the Twitter account specifically to promote your content on other platforms, you will have to pay for it, though we do not know how yet.
If found in violation, Twitter can delete the tweet. Also, it can temporarily ban you from the platform.
Twitter revokes policy, Musk apologizes
Now that both the tweets and the post have been deleted, the rules have been revoked. So, it remains vague if sharing the links or usernames of other social media platforms on Twitter remains prohibited.
A few hours ago, Twitter, through its @TwitterSafety handle, tweeted a poll asking users if there should be a policy preventing users from using their account mainly for advertising other social media handles.
The poll will end later tonight, and the majority of the users have voted ‘No’ till now.
In reply to tweets outlining the policy, Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and ex-CEo of Twitter, said Why? In another reply to a user, who highlights the ban on Nostr, a new decentralized social network protocol to whom Dorsey gave 14 bitcoins as an investment, he said, “doesn’t make sense.” Another user notes that the Nostr is there because Jack has a link to it in his profile.
