Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey launches Twitter alternative app Bluesky

For the past few months, Dorsey has been developing an application that would be powered by the open-source social protocol that he created. This protocol is known as the Authenticated Transfer Protocol, or “AT Protocol” for short.

AT is Bluesky’s main project, while the Bluesky mobile app shows how the protocol works in action. Like the ActivityPub protocol that runs Mastodon, AT lets you make a federated and decentralised social networkas first reported by TechCrunch. There has been some criticism of the project, especially from Mastodon and other developers. They pointed out that ActivityPub, which is a recommended W3C standard, already powers a large and growing “Fediverse” of connected servers.

What is the Bluesky project?

The Bluesky project, which is now a public benefit company, was first started in 2019 when Dorsey was the Twitter CEO. Twitter has also given it money for many years. Even though the company was started before Elon Musk bought Twitter, the two executives had talked about the idea of an open-source protocol over text messages just before Musk bought Twitter.

In text messages, Dorsey told Musk that a new platform is needed. Later in November 2021, he resigned as CEO, but he stayed on Twitter’s board until May 2022. Shortly after that, Dorsey talked about Bluesky on Twitter, calling it “an open, decentralised standard for social media”.
