Twitter has killed third-party apps like Twitterific, Tweetbot – Times of India

After a few days of speculation, it has indeed been confirmed that Twitter has blocked third-party apps from accessing its API. These third-party apps include Twitterific and Tweetbot, which were quite popular and had been around for a while now.
Twitter ‘quietly’ made some changes
According to a report by Engadget, Twitter has made one change to its developer agreement. There’s a section called Restrictions in the developer agreement, which was updated this week. Twitter inserted a clause which bans “use or access the Licensed Materials to create or attempt to create a substitute or similar service or product to the Twitter Applications.” In other words, any app which use Twitter API to create a similar experience will be banned.
Many third-party apps went down and the developers were left wondering what had gone wrong. For the first few days, Twitter didn’t make any comment on the matter. But earlier this week, Twitter said that it “is enforcing its long-standing API rules. That may result in some apps not working.” However, app developers said that they were operating for years within Twitter’s rules.
Third-party apps shut down
Twitterific, which was popular among users, has confirmed that the app has been discontinued. In a blog post, the developer said that it doesn’t want to work with Twitter any longer. “We are sorry to say that the app’s sudden and undignified demise is due to an unannounced and undocumented policy change by an increasingly capricious Twitter – a Twitter that we no longer recognise as trustworthy nor want to work with any longer.”
Twitter — or for that matter Elon Musk — haven’t made any public comment on the whole issue. Musk who is extremely prolific and vocal on Twitter hasn’t commented on the matter.
One of the main reasons behind the banning of apps perhaps is that they don’t allow advertising. Twitter has been bleeding money and perhaps didn’t want its user base to have access to platforms that gave the same service but without any ads.
