Twitter hasn’t paid rent of San Francisco headquarters since weeks, here’s why – Times of India

Elon Musk has been working on numerous ways to turn Twitter’s fortune after his $44 billion deal to purchase the social media platform. The company’s owner has been on a firing spree and laid off most of the staff to cut losses. It looks like he is not stopping there. If a report is to be believed Twitter hasn’t paid rent of its offices and is considering not paying severance packages to laid-off workers to save some money.
As per a report by the New York Times, Twitter has not paid rent for its San Francisco headquarters in weeks as Musk has been trying to renegotiate the terms of the company’s lease. The report also mentions that the social media company has received multiple complaints from Shorenstein, the real estate firm which owns Twitter’s San Francisco building.
Furthermore, Twitter has reportedly refused to pay nearly $2,00,000 in private plane flights taken in late October.

No severance for laid-off employees
As mentioned, Musk’s first major decision after acquiring the company was to fire 50% of its nearly 7,500-person workforce. At that time, Musk promised that the laid off employees would get 3 months’ pay that would include 60 days of salaried pay and one month of severance.
However, the New York Times report claims that Musk’s team is now weighing the possibility of not paying the severance at all. This could leave the company at risk of lawsuits from former workers.
Twitter is already facing a number of lawsuits after Musk fired most of the staff soon after taking over the company. It was reported that people filed cases against Musk for not receiving the promised severance.
Along with severance-related cases, Twitter is also said to be facing another case wherein two female Twitter employees have filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, accusing it of gender discrimination at the workplace.
Elon Musk fires his personal lawyer
The New York Times report also suggests that Musk’s personal lawyer is no longer working for Twitter. Citing six people, the report says that Musk was unhappy with his personal lawyer Alex Spiro.
