Use Chrome on an Android tablet? This update is for you.

TL;DR

  • Google has announced a slew of additions to Chrome for Android tablets.
  • This includes easier tab switching, a visual tab grid, and drag-and-drop support.

Now, Google has announced a variety of tablet-focused features in the latest Chrome for Android release. The company also confirmed that these additions would be available on its Pixel Tablet, scheduled for 2023. So what should you expect?

For starters, Chrome for Android tablets now has a new auto-scroll feature. This allows you to swipe laterally to switch between tabs, making it easier if you’re switching back and forth between a couple of websites. Google adds that it’ll also hide the close button when your tabs get too small so you don’t accidentally close them.

What else is coming to Chrome for Android tablets?

The additions don’t stop here, as the company is also bringing a visual tab grid view to Chrome for tablets, ostensibly accessible via an upward swipe. The update also brings drag-and-drop support, allowing you to drag links, images, and text from the browser to other apps.

Another notable feature is tab groups, as previously seen on Chrome for computers. But Google says this is “coming soon” rather than being available right now.

Finally, the company is also touting desktop mode for Chrome on tablets, although this feature has been available for a while now. However, Google’s statement suggests that this might now be available on a site-by-site basis.

Chrome for Android tablets still has some way to go to offer a comparable experience to the desktop version. So hopefully we see additions like extension support, custom search engines, multiple profiles, and more in the near future.
