Virgin Media offers 1.6 million better broadband speeds at lower prices too
If you’re fed up with sluggish broadband speeds then help could be on its way. Virgin Media O2 has just announced that it’s connected another 1.6million homes to very its very best Gig1 technology meaning 90 percent of its users can now access this blisteringly quick connection.
Gig1 offers downloads in excess of 1Gbps which is around 14 times faster than the current UK average.
To put that into some perspective, if you wanted to download a full HD movie via a standard 70Mbps connection it would take around 12 minutes.
Subscribe to Virgin’s Gig1 and that same film would take just 40 seconds to arrive on your TV.
As well as better overall speeds, 1Gbps technology can also cope with more traffic flowing through it at the same time – that’s vital for homes that are now full of connected gadgets or families all trying to stream Netflix at the same time.
If you weren’t already aware, broadband is a bit like a motorway – once it gets busy things to tend to slow but the faster your speeds are in the first place the less likely you are to suffer annoying buffering.
Virgin Media O2 says it has now upgraded its network to this next-generation connectivity in towns and cities including Lincoln, Bath, Lancaster, Fife, Huddersfield, Ipswich, Slough and Salisbury among many others.
Speaking about the upgrade, Lutz Schüler, Chief Executive Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “We’re making great strides ahead in upgrading the UK and are within touching distance of bringing the benefits of future-proof gigabit broadband to everyone on our network.
“With our gigabit rollout progressing at an unmatched pace, we’re building the next-generation broadband network that’s ready for the technology of tomorrow.”
Of course, Virgin’s best Gig1 service isn’t free with the firm charging £62 per month for the privilege of those improved download speeds – that’s around double the price of its standard.
If that cost hasn’t put you off you can sign up for this plan here.
Along with this 1Gbps arriving today, there’s more good news on the horizon with Virgin promising even better speeds in the future.
The company says it’s working on plans to upgrade its network with it hoped that users may see speeds in excess of 9Gbps by 2028.
At that rapid rate, it would take just four seconds to download a full HD Hollywood blockbuster.
If you’re not bothered by those ludicrously fast speeds then it’s worth checking out Virgin’s new Black Friday deals which have just gone live.
Right now, customers can pick up the firm’s M100 speeds for £25 or M200 for £31 per month. You can see all the best deals here
