WhatsApp banned over 2 million accounts in October, according to a new report | 91mobiles.com

The latest WhatsApp India Monthly report under the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 Act details the number of accounts banned in the month of October. In total, the messaging app said that it received 500 grievance reports, out of which 146 were related to account support, 248 of ban appeals, 53 were related to product support, 11 were of safety, and the rest of the 42 were related to other support queries.

During the same October month, 18 accounts were thus “actioned” under the ban appeal category from WhatsApp, based on the grievance reports it received. WhatsApp explained that “Accounts Actioned” accounts denote reports where it took remedial action based on the grievances it received. Also, many reports may have been reviewed but not included in the banned list for many reasons, including the user needing assistance to access their account or to use some features, user-requested restoration of a banned account and the request is denied, or if the reported account does not violate the laws of India or WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. Hence so many accounts were not actioned by the messaging app.

Previously, in September, WhatsApp banned over 2.2 million accounts in India. It received 560 grievance appeals from users back then, out of which only 51 accounts were actioned. Further, the messaging app banned about 2 million Indian accounts in August in India, after it received 420 grievance reports in total.
