WhatsApp down: Has WhatsApp been hacked? Why is social networking site down?

Instant messaging service WhatsApp has gone down. Users have reported outages of the service, alongside social media platforms Instagram and Facebook. The three apps are all owned by the Facebook company.

Video and voice calls were also impacted by the mass outage.

According to DownDetector, an independent service that tracks customer complaints regarding online service customers across social media, the ongoing outage is impacting more than 47,200 users at the time of writing.

One Twitter user named Joonahsgirl said: “Is it just for me or are Instagram and WhatsApp acting up?”

Another user named James Allen added: “Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram all down and in UK!!”

Why is WhatsApp down?

The problems have been caused by a mass outage to some services provided by Facebook.

Currently, the tech giant has not confirmed why the outages have happened.

Facebook is typically fairly cryptic when it comes to its services going down, and often does not reveal the reason why this has happened until after the service has resumed.

Has WhatsApp been hacked?

There is no sure way to know whether or not WhatsApp’s service outages are the result of being hacked.

WhatsApp and its parent company Facebook have not yet clarified the reason behind the outage.
