WhatsApp may get this ‘Snapchat’ feature soon – Times of India

Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced the ‘View Once’ feature for photos and videos as a part of its added privacy feature. Now, a new report by WABetaInfo claims that the Meta-owned instant messaging platform is working on an extension of the feature for text messages.
According to the report, WhatsApp is working on introducing a ‘’View Once’’ feature for text messages that will allow users to send text messages that can only be viewed once by the receiver. Also, just like it happens with the photos and videos, the text message with the ‘View Once’ turned on will expire and can’t be viewed.
Also, the report adds that the text messages that can only be viewed once can’t be copied, saved or forwarded. Also, taking screenshots of these messages may not be possible.
Snapchat has a similar feature that lets users share a text message. The message disappears after the user has read it or when the user closes the chat. Something similar is also available on Instagram where the messages automatically get deleted after the chat has been closed.
As per the screenshot shared, users will see a new ‘send button with lock’ icon instead of the regular send button after enabling the ‘View Once’ feature for text messages.
Beta testing
The new feature is currently being tested in beta and is currently available to a limited number of beta users. Also, as per the report, the feature is available in the latest WhatsApp beta version 2.22.25.20 on Android.
As of now,WhatsApp expanding this beta testing to more beta users or even rolling out the feature to all users is up for speculation only and the instant messaging platform has not confirmed the final build yet.
Just like the photos and videos, a ‘View Once’ feature in text messages could give users peace of mind for sensitive messages that aren’t actually supposed to be shared in general.
