WhatsApp may soon roll out ‘view once’ feature, here’s how it may work

Snapchat has a rather popular feature called Disappearing messages. As the name suggests, the message disappears once a user has seen it. It looks a similar functionality may soon come to WhatsApp as well. According to a report by WaBetaInfo, the feature — likely to be called ‘view once’ — has been spotted in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android.

How will the feature work?

According to the report — citing screenshots of the feature in works — users will see a lock symbol within the send button. If users press the lock symbol, then the message will be sent as view one. Once the recipient opens it and views the message, they will not be able to read or see the message again. It is likely that with these messages, images, videos, it will not be possible to forward them at all. As per the report, there’s no clarity about whether users can or cannot take a screenshot of the view once message.

When will the feature be rolled out?

Since the feature is in beta mode, it is expected that it may roll out soon. Having said that, there’s no official word from WhatsApp on the feature and there have been features that don’t make the final cut even after being spotted in beta versions. However, this is a feature that is very likely to make an appearance sooner than later.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp recently rolled out Avatars for its users. In a blog post, WhatsApp said that “Your avatar is a digital version of you that can be created from billions of combinations of diverse hairstyles, facial features, and outfits.” On WhatsApp, users can now use their personalised avatar as their profile photo or choose from one of 36 custom stickers reflecting many different emotions and actions.
