WhatsApp will stop working on these iPhones, Android phones from Diwali – Times of India

WhatsApp is one the most used instant-messaging apps with over 2 billion monthly active users globally, and India is its largest market with over 500 million accounts. With Diwali season underway, a lot of people will exchange greetings, photos and videos on the app. However, if you are using an older iPhone or Android smartphone, you may not be able to connect with your friends and family over WhatsApp. On October 24, the day of Diwali, the instant messaging app is dropping support for phones running older iOS and Android OS.
WhatsApp will drop support for these iPhones
WhatsApp is dropping the support for iPhones running iOS 10 and iOS 11. Additionally, iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C users will not be able to use WhatsApp on their phones. As per the instant-messaging app, the decision has been taken because certain functionalities that the company will introduce may not work on old operating systems.
WhatsApp currently supports devices that are running iOS 12 or newer. Still, it recommends using the latest version available so that the newest features of the app run smoothly on those smartphones.
WhatsApp is pulling the plug on these Android phones
As per WhatsApp supported devices page, the support of the app is also getting dropped on all Android devices running Android 4.1 or older.
Users can either update the OS on their phones, which seems a little unrealistic in the real-world scenario today, or they can get a new smartphone altogether.

WhatsApp notes that it looks at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest number of people still using them. It says that these old devices might not have the latest security updates or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.
WhatsApp says it will send notifications directly in WhatsApp ahead of time and remind users to upgrade before it stops supporting the operating system running on their phone.
WhatsApp on KaiOS
WhatsApp says that it works on KaiOS 2.5.0 and newer. The phones running on this OS include the JioPhone and the JioPhone 2.
