The research note (accessed by ITHome) by Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu suggests that Apple’s baseband chips are unlikely to be launched before 2025 and the Cupertino-based company will continue using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon modems. This means that at least the next two generations of iPhone, which are likely to be called iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, respectively.
The iPhone models that are expected to debut next year may use the Snapdragon X70 modem claimed to provide download speeds of up to 10Gbps and 60% enhanced battery efficiency. The 2024 iPhone models are said to use Qualcomm’s yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon X75 modem. The analyst also claims that the Snapdragon X75 is expected to be built on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) 4nm process.
Earlier this year, famous TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had claimed that Apple had been trying to develop its own 5G modem chip for iPhones and planning to partner with TSMC for the same. Citing a survey conducted by him, he claimed that the company has failed to develop its own 5G modem chips in time for the iPhone 15.
Qualcomm will remain the exclusive supplier for 5G modem chips for new iPhones with a 100% supply share. In November last year, Qualcomm had said that it believed it would supply only 20% of the 5G modem chips to Apple for use in its 2023 iPhone models. However, with reports suggesting Apple’s failure to develop its own modem could help the US-based chipmaker beat market estimates in financial results for the second half of 2023 and first half of 2024.
