Why Apple, Samsung and others are ‘worried’ over India’s NavIC – Times of India

Russia has GLONASS, China has BeiDou, the European Union has Galileo whereas India has NavIC. If you are wondering what these are then these are navigation systems — based on the lines of GPS — that are proprietary to these countries. According to a report by Reuters, the government of India has been pushing smartphone majors to incorporate NavIC in their devices.
What is NavIC?
NavIC stands for Navigation with Indian Constellation. It is very similar to GPS but is designed keeping in mind domestic navigation. NavIC first came into existence in 2006 but actually started operations in 2018. NavIC is an independent regional system over the Indian region and does not depend on other systems for providing position service within the country. NavIC, as per the government of India, was “conceived and built mainly with the aim of having an independent navigation satellite system for India to remove the dependence on foreign satellite systems for navigation service requirements, especially for the strategic sector.”
What does India want Apple, Samsung and others to do?
According to the report, the Indian government is asking tech companies to ensure their devices are compatible with NavIC. But the news hasn’t gone down well with the likes of Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi. The Reuters report suggests that the companies told the government the cost of production will go up if they integrate NavIC in their devices. Further, they said that to implement NavIC will need more testing clearances and that can’t be done. Government reportedly wants tech companies to integrate NavIC by 2023.
What do tech companies want to do?
The report states that Samsung India’s executives told government officials that to integrate NavIC, they would need new processors along with hardware changes. Companies could take up to three years to implement NavIC in their phones.
Further, the frequency on which NavIC operates isn’t too common in smartphones. NavIC works — or rather relies on — the L5 satellite frequency. What Samsung and others want is India to use L1 frequency, which is the same used in GPS. Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and Watch Ultra, incidentally, do use L5 frequency.
