Why did The Callisto Protocol’s developer drop the “PUBG connection” from the game

Striking Distance Studios, the creators of The Callisto Protocol at first announced that the game will be related to PUBG: Battlegrounds “to some degree” in 2020. However, the game-developing studio confirmed in May that its new horror game would not have any connection with the PUBG title. The gaming studio didn’t even share any details about how this connection would’ve been implemented and how The Callisto Protocol would’ve bridged itself with the PUBG universe. Meanwhile, the developer has offered some insight into why it decided to drop the connection plan.
Why did The Callisto Protocol drop the “PUBG connection”
According to a report by PCGamesN, Striking Distance Studio’s chief technology officer, Mark James has addressed the topic of the PUBG connection as part of the recently concluded Gamescom proceedings. James has explained that “as The Callisto Protocol grew, it became more challenging to both tell the game’s story and still have it connected to PUBG.”

Moreover, he also added that the studio approached Krafton, the publisher of The Callisto Protocol about its plans. James mentioned that Krafton has approved the studio’s plan to abandon the connection if it thought the move will be best for the game.
James also noted that on comparing the universes of both these games, the studio found out that there was “a good 400 years in between both of them.” He also added that “the connection would have taken away from the Callisto universe. It became so difficult to tell our story and still make that connection.” Moreover, Krafton understood the issue of how the connection might affect the game(s) and decided to approve Striking Distance’s plans.
Another report by Game Informer noted Glen Schofield, CEO of Striking Distance Studios and The Callisto Protocol’s game director, claimed that the game “outgrew” its PUBG connection.

Furthermore, an older Comicbook.com report recorded Steve Papoutsis, the chief development officer of The Callisto Protocol, who offered some insights into the game’s PUBG connection back in June. Papoutsis mentioned things like the game’s melee combat system as well as the idea of having a more talkative protagonist, the report notes.
