Why Facebook and Instagram will show even more posts from unknown accounts – Times of India

Multiple Instagram users have recently complained that the platform is pushing random videos into their feeds. Replying to that, Instagram head Adam Mosseri shared a video on Twitter to inform users that the Meta-owned platform will “continue to support photos.” According to a report by The Verge, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also confirmed that starting next year, the Instagram feed will show even more Reels from accounts that users don’t follow. Zuckerberg has also mentioned that the company will increase (more than double) the amount of content from recommended accounts users see while using Instagram and Facebook by the end of 2023. He even claimed that such recommendations currently account for nearly around 15% of the content on Facebook and the percentage is even higher for Instagram.
Why Meta is pushing content from unknown accounts on its social media platforms
Meta CEO Zuckerberg has dubbed this push as building the “Discovery Engine,” which will shift Facebook and Instagram from their “historical focus” of showing posts from a user’s social graph, or list of friends. With this change, Meta intends to compete with TikTok’s high reliability on AI that pulls up videos regardless of their source or origin, the report suggests. Moreover, this strategy has helped TikTok to become one of the most used apps in the world and also create a new creator economy.
At a recent Meta meeting, Zuckerberg explained that Al helps in finding additional content that users find interesting and finally increases the engagement and the quality of users’ feeds. He also said that Meta will use AI to recommend all the content people publicly share on the platform including — links and photos.
Talking about TikTok’s specific focus on short videos, Zuckerberg claimed that Meta’s approach to using the AI will be “pretty unique,” and he thinks that users don’t “want to be constrained to one format.”
Facebook’s previous attempt to recommend content
In 2018, Zuckerberg announced a strategy focused on encouraging “meaningful social interactions” (MSI) between friends in the News Feed on Facebook. Previously, Zuckerberg envisioned that this approach will help in decreasing the time spent on the social media network but will leave users feeling better. At that point, he said, “The research shows that when we use social media to connect with people we care about, it can be good for our well-being. On the other hand, passively reading articles or watching videos — even if they’re entertaining or informative — may not be as good.”
Zuckerberg has now decided to change the architecture of the feeds on its social media platforms as Meta’s business starts to slow down and Facebook’s user base starts aging. He mentioned that users are moving away from sharing in feeds and are instead communicating over private or direct messages. He added, “One social trend that we’re seeing is that instead of people just interacting in comments in feeds, most people find interesting content in their feeds and then message that content to friends and interact there.”
