Why the Kardashians aren’t happy with Instagram
Jenner, who by the way is the second most followed account on Instagram, posted a Story on Instagram. “Make Instagram, Instagram again. (Stop trying to be tiktok i just want to see cute photos of my friends). Sincerely, everyone.”
The post was immediately shared by her sister Kim and garnered over 1.2 likes at last count. The post had a change.org petition — surprise, surprise — and had over 100,000 signatures.
Why the demand to make Instagram, Instagram again?
Over the last one year or so, Instagram hasn’t been about photos anymore. The platform has been constantly shoving Reels down users’ throats — something that was inspired by TikTok. Many changes have been made where it is evident that Reels is the most prominent feature of Instagram. Earlier this week, Instagram announced a new feature, which hasn’t gone down well with the Kardashians. Instagram said that any “new video posts shorter than 15 minutes will be shared as reels. Videos posted prior to this change will remain as videos and won’t become reels.” In other words, almost every video on Instagram will become a Reel.
Should Instagram be listening to the Kardashians?
If you are a billionaire and have more than 360 million followers — which Jenner does and is second only to Cristiano Ronaldo — then perhaps you do have some clout. And Jenner has a track record. Back in 2018, Snapchat redesigned its app and got a lot of complaints from users. Jenner didn’t complain as such but did tweet that she doesn’t use or open the app anymore. The next day, Snap’s stock lost close to $1.3 billion in value, according to a report by The Verge. So far, Instagram hasn’t commented on the changes but it is rather unlikely — even after Kardashians’ being unhappy — as Reels is big money spinner for the platform.
There is a growing band of users who aren’t happy with the changes but that’s not something which is new. Every time Instagram — or Facebook for that matter — makes certain changes, there is always a section of users that are unhappy with it. The difference, however, this time is that two of the most famous celebrities in the world are in that section. Will Instagram bow down and make changes?
