Why Twitter doesn’t want you to take screenshots of tweets – Times of India
Twitter is trying to dissuade users from taking screenshots by showing them pop-ups when they try to get a screen grab, as per a report by Techcrunch. Through the pop-ups, the microblogging platform is urging users to go for sharing the tweets option instead of taking screenshots. By discouraging screenshots, it seems like Twitter wants its users to do more interaction on its platform and not share the screen grabs over different social media platforms.
People on Twitter are coming across different types of pop-ups. Some people are seeing a “Copy Link” button when they try to take a screenshot, some are getting a “Share Tweet” button while others see a dialog with both the options.
Sharing the tweets would result in more interaction among users on Twitter platform, something which the company clearly wants to encourage. If in future, the company makes it more difficult to take screenshots, it may see a spike in the number of users on the platforms as those who don’t have a Twitter account might give signing-up a shot to connect more easily with their friends on the same platform. The ploy seems to get more monetisable users for Twitter so that they can be served ads also once they sign-up.
In other related news, WhatsApp is testing a new tool in beta that will prevent users from taking screenshots of media that are marked as View Once content. This privacy tool was announced by Mark Zuckerberg in August and is expected to make View Once images and videos more secure. According to a tweet by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has started rolling out a new beta version 2.22.22.3 for the instant messaging app on Android.
The View Once content feature is currently available to a limited number of beta testers and the company has not shared any official details about the release date of the stable version of this tool. The feature that lets you block taking screenshots of the View Once images is expected to reach users soon.
