World Population Day 2022: ‘A world of 8 billion’, a day to celebrate or analyse?
The theme set by the United Nations for this year’s World Population Day is, ‘A world of 8 billion’. UN Secretary General, António Guterres said, “Reaching a global population of eight billion is a numerical landmark, but our focus must always be on people. In the world we strive to build, 8 billion people means 8 billion opportunities to live dignified and fulfilled lives.”
It took thousands of years for the world to reach 1 billion people– in another 200 years, then numbers have swiftly increased. As per the United Nations, in 2011 the world had already hit 7 billion people. The response from the respondents prompted them to mark 8 billion this year.
In a growing and developing world, 8 billion population refers to 8 billion opportunities, 8 billion citizens exercising their rights in the country and others. Amid the rising population, negative elements such as gender discriminaton, child marriage, violence, physical apperance, disabilit and other such issues have worsened over the years.
