Xbox goes ‘green’ with ‘carbon-aware’ energy saver option – Times of India
A new sustainable power-saving mode has just arrived for Xbox Series X to help Microsoft meet its deadline of 2030 for its environmental goals. The ‘carbon aware’ power-saving mode of Xbox claims to be up to 20 times more efficient than the existing power consumption modes without compromising performance.
Microsoft says that Xbox is now the first gaming console to become ‘carbon-aware.’ Last year, the company rolled out a similar power-saving mode for Windows 11. But what does being carbon-aware mean? It means reducing carbon footprint by optimising downloads and updates to run at a time when the console or the PC can use the most renewable energy, says Microsoft.
While the Shutdown power option was made default for Xbox consoles shipped after March last year, several Xbox consoles, including the One and Series X/S models, still use the more convenient Sleep option.
Xbox consoles to reduce CO2 emissions while being light on your pocket
In the Shutdown power mode, when your Xbox is plugged in, connected to the internet, and the regional carbon data is available, the console will schedule, game, app, and updates at a specific time during the nightly maintenance window. This all happens when the console can use the most renewable energy from the energy grid, reducing carbon footprint and saving you money.
With the latest update, the ‘Shutdown’ power option comes to the rest of Xbox Series X/S, making it the default option on consoles after the update. Although, users will have the choice to switch to Sleep mode.
Do note that the update is only available to a select batch of users known as Insiders. However, Microsoft notes that the update will soon be rolled out to all the Xbox Series X/S consoles. Meanwhile, the ‘carbon-aware’ update drops for Xbox One consoles today.
With the new update, Xbox Insiders will also see a new “Active hours” setting that lets users adjust the console’s active hours, in which the console boots quickly, and you also get the option for remote wake. Once the active hours get over, the console will shut down, drawing just 0.5W while active
On Xbox Series X/S, the active hours are automatically determined based on past usage, whereas on Xbox One, users must manually set the active hours.
