xbox: Microsoft reportedly wanted Apple to allow it to bring Xbox games to iOS, here’s what happened – Times of India

Microsoft has been looking to get the Xbox games on Apple’s iOS platform. To land a deal, Lori Wright, Xbox head of business development, reportedly laid out a proposal for Apple for the same, as per a report by The Verge. According to the proposal, Apple would have to allow Microsoft to put the individual Xbox game apps on the iOS store, which is as per its decree only but instead of forcing the user to download each game as an app separately (and thus eating up the storage), they would be streamed using a single Xbox Gaming Pass app.
The idea is to have the option of exploring a large number of games without having to sacrifice on the device storage. For the plan to work, Apple would have to allow Microsoft’s streaming technology in the Gaming Pass app, which would have reduced the game apps individually to a size of around 30MB instead of the 150MB if the streaming technology was incorporated into each game. The games would be streamed out of remote Microsoft servers.
As you can guess, Apple refused Microsoft’s proposal. Wright is also said to have offered to make Xbox-exclusives available for iOS users. “This would be an incredibly exciting opportunity for iOS users to get access to these exclusive AAA titles in addition to the Game Pass games,” she wrote in an email seen by The Verge. But that didn’t help convince Apple who wanted each game to be streamed separately.
As per the report, Apple said that Microsoft’s proposal didn’t adhere to its App Store Review Guidelines, “specifically the requirement to use in-app purchase to unlock additional features or functionality within an app.” Microsoft, on the other hand, has denied that in-app purchases were the cause behind Apple’s rejection of the proposal.
