With the update, Xbox consoles will become “carbon aware,” being up to 20 times more efficient than before. The consoles connected to the internet will access regional carbon intensity data and schedule game downloads and updates during a nightly maintenance window corresponding to periods of lower carbon emissions. As a result, more electricity from lower-carbon sources will be used during these times, thus lowering carbon emissions.
Alongside the ‘carbon aware’ mode, Xbox also introduced the “Shutdown” energy-saving option. If you can tolerate longer startup times and forgo the Xbox’s remote wake capability.
