Xiaomi announces Android 13-based MIUI 14: What’s new, changes and more – Times of India

Xiaomi has officially unveiled its latest custom skin — MIUI 14 — at the same event where it launched its new Xiaomi 13 flagship series that was recently held in China. This new Android 13-based mobile interface offers improved performance and cross-device collaboration, along with multiple new features and visual changes. Xiaomi has also confirmed that the firmware size of MIUI 14 is also smaller than MIUI 13. The company also claims that the new custom skin will provide better performance and efficiency with enhanced system architecture.
Xiaomi MIUI 14: New visual changes
Starting with icons to the overall UI, Xiaomi has implemented some prominent visual changes in the new custom ROM. MIUI 14 will offer users more customisation options by allowing them to adjust icon sizes. The company’s latest Android skin will also include new widget formats and home screen folders.
With MIUI 14, Xiaomi has also tried to recreate a similar experience to the one offered by the Pixel Pals app on iOS. The new software comes with pet and plant widgets which users can interact or play with by adding the pet/plant ornament on the home screen.
Xiaomi MIUI 14: Key features
Xiaomi has also claimed that MIUI 14 will be a lighter software that will be smaller in size compared to the previous versions. The Android skin will even feature a new photon engine that will help third-party developers to create better and more power-efficient apps.
The company has also reduced the number of unremovable bloatware. Now, only eight pre-installed apps cannot be uninstalled. Xiaomi even claims to have improved the fluency of the system by up to 60% (using Xiaomi 12S Ultra). Apart from the system apps, third-party apps will also offer improved performance and efficiency.
MIUI 14 is also said to include a new app cleaning feature that will compress low-frequency apps and save only one copy of duplicate files. Users will be allowed to close the permanent notifications with just one swipe. Moreover, users also have to authorise notifications for newly installed apps.
Xiaomi has also improved privacy by locally storing all actions performed on the device without using the cloud. The new custom skin even has multiple AI features like — extracting text from images and holding text on a Gallery image to instantly recognise it. MIUI 14 also offers a live captioning feature for video conferences and supports up to eight languages.

The Mi AI voice assistant has also been upgraded with new features. Apart from performing daily tasks with voice commands, the improved voice assistant can now translate documents, scan them and filter spam calls.
Interconnectivity amongst other ecosystem products has also been boosted with the new skin. MIUI 14 has a new paired-device interface where each connected device occupies its space onscreen. Some of them can also be moved to switch inputs. Xiaomi also claims that over a billion devices are supported by two major interconnection centres.
The redesigned Xiaomi Magic centre (a platform to manage Xiaomi ecosystem products) also offers improved interconnection speed between devices. The company claims to have improved earbuds discovery speed by 50%, picture transfer speed by 77% and TV connection by 12%.

Xiaomi’s 5G plans for Redmi Note series revealed

Alongside this, Xiaomi has also revamped the interface for using smart home gadgets and has added multiple family-related features to the new custom skin. MIUI 14 will enable users to create groups with up to 8 family members and can assign them various roles and different permissions.
This new Android skin will let users share photo albums as well as health data like heart rate, blood oxygen, and sleep with family members. MIUI 14 also has several parental control features that can set a secure area, restrict app usage, limit screen time and more.
