Xiaomi’s new smartphone comes with two 1-inch sensors and an interchangeable lens: Here’s everything you need to know – Times of India

Earlier this year, Xiaomi partnered with Leica and introduced 12S Ultra, featuring a 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor, a much-larger module than you would find on a typical smartphone. Though it was not the only smartphone the Chinese smartphone manufacturer was working on, there was one more 12S Ultra, a far more experimental one – the “Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept” – donning the same look as the other one but with a second 1-inch 50.3-megapixel sensor.
Equipped with two 1-inch sensors, the 12S Ultra Concept is made to work with the full-size Leica M series lens. The concept is not something that Xiaomi started working on recently, but it has been developing this one much before the launch of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.
Unlike mirrorless cameras, which come with an opening for the sensor, a sensor in 12S Ultra Concept has been covered with sapphire glass. The second 1-inch sensor sits in the middle of the module, and the 48MP ultra-wide camera has been moved to the side, doing away with the periscope camera.
With the M-mount in its place, a number of M-lenses can be worked with the smartphone, though one would need an adaptor, thus increasing the weight of the whole setup. Xiaomi showcased Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH with the 12S Ultra Concept, turning it into a “ professional photo-making tool.”
Powering the smartphone is the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, bringing the same level of image processing as its counterpart. The 12S Ultra Concept gets some new software tricks, such as focus peaking, grid, histogram, and more. Further, the camera can also shoot in 10-bit RAW format.
Sadly, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept will remain a concept, as the company has no plans to make it commercially available. But, who knows, we may see this concept becoming reality in the far future.
