LG made the decision to exit the smartphone business earlier this year, although it promised up to three years of OS updates for its recent flagship phones. However, those wanting to tinker with their LG phone might want to request the device’s bootloader unlock key right now.
“After the service is terminated, all information provided on the website and issuing the bootloader unlock key will not be available,” reads an excerpt of the shutdown notice.
The bootloader unlock key is needed in order to (surprise) unlock your LG phone’s bootloader. Once the phone’s bootloader is unlocked, users can root the device or install custom ROMs. This will be particularly important for LG phones in the future as these devices eventually stop receiving updates.
In other words, you should act right now even if you don’t currently plan to root or install custom ROMs on your LG phone. Otherwise, the unlock key will be gone forever.
