TL;DR

  • Boost Mobile will apply video game design principles to wireless billing.
  • The gamification will give customers the ability to earn free service via Boost Coins.
  • Eventually customers will be able to earn free phones.

Boost Mobile is looking to revolutionize the cellular industry, applying gamification principles to wireless billing.

Boost Mobile is one of the leading budget wireless providers in the US, but it’s working to make its plans even cheaper. The company is taking the same principles that make video games so popular and profitable and applying them to wireless billing, essentially giving customers a way to earn free service through its BoostOne mobile app.

Gamification is a core principle of modern video game design, wherein users can play games within a video game to earn points. Those points can be redeemed for premium in-game gear, paid subscription time, and more.

Boost plans on implementing similar methods, giving customers the ability to earn Boost Coins. Customers can earn coins by logging in to the BoostOne app, playing games like Spin the Wheel, or watching advertisements from Boost’s partners. Those coins can be redeemed for free service and eventually for free phones. The company plans on rolling out the feature across all of its plans, giving all customers the ability to cash in.

“This represents an exciting new business model and a stepping stone into the future for wireless consumers,” Boost EVP of Retail Wireless, Stephen Stokols said. “Most telcos rely on subscription models, but it’s time to move beyond the old ways and to embrace proven digital models popular in other industries,” Stokols continued.
