YouTube rolls out YouTube Emotes: What is it, how it works and more

YouTube has started rolling out a new way for users to express in comments on videos. The Google-owned video platform seems to have been ‘inspired’ by a similar feature which is there on Twitch. YouTube is starting off with YouTube Emotes in Gaming as of now with other genres getting it later. Here are all the details:

What are YouTube Emotes?

On one of its support pages, YouTube described what Emotes are. “Emotes are fun sets of static images you can use across the platform to help build a sense of community, exclusively on YouTube,” said YouTube in the post. YouTube said that it is starting with emotes created for Gaming but will be rolling out more themes of emotes in the future. YouTube also revealed that the Gaming Emotes were created by independent artists Abelle Hayford, Guy Field and Yujin Won. YouTube hasn’t clarified which regions the Emotes are being rolled out in, so it maybe a global rollout only.

How to use YouTube Emotes?

Users will see a smiley icon in a live chat or comments section underneath a video. To use Emotes, click on that icon and you will see all of the emotes & emojis available to you. YouTube emotes will be right below any channel membership custom emojis. YouTube also says that Emotes also have specific names users can type to autocomplete in live chat, It will work very much how custom emojis work. For instance, if you type “:cat-orange-whistling:” in chat, then the Emote will appear.
It is very much similar to how Emotes actually work on Twitch. Even on Twitch, users have to click on the smiley icon at the bottom of the chat box to access all the emotes available. However, Twitch has a far bigger range of Emotes as it was launched much earlier on the platform.
